March 22, 2011 At the meeting on March 22nd, Clarkdale's Town Council became the first Verde Valley community committing to the solar installation goals of the Arizona Solar Challenge of "5% of owner-occupied households installing solar electric or solar hot water systems by 2015". The Challenge is the undertaking of Arizona Smart Power, a non-profit organization funded by foundations such as the Pew Charitable Trusts and hired by APS to stimulate solar installations. Arizona SmartPower's State Director Toni Bouchard presented the program to the Council and responded to their questions. While the exact number of owner-occupied homes will be released in the next few months as more 2010 Census details become available, the estimated total installations needed to meet the Challenge is estimated to be between 100 and 125. These installations will be tracked by the number of solar incentive checks APS writes to homeowners living in Clarkdale's zip code of 86324. Thus far, APS has written 49 incentive checks to folks living in our zip code. With participation in this program comes the free use of a solar coach. Steve Loritz of Arizona SmartPower is ready and available to help residents with the process of installing solar systems. He can help homeowners determine the costs of a possible system, the costs expected to be deferred with the installation of solar systems, and a list of possible installers working in the area. In addition, if so desired, Town residents who have already installed solar electric or heated water systems may participate in the program as solar ambassadors, encouraging friends and neighbors with their solar installations. On May 7th, Steve Loritz will be attending Clarkdale's first "Sustainability in Our Backyard" event from 8 a.m. until noon at the Town Hall Complex. Anyone with questions about adding solar power to their homes is welcome to stop by and visit Steve. If preferred, Steve will also set up individual appointments so he can spend more time with folks and answer their solar questions. Steve may be reached at SLoritz@SmartPower.org or 928-637-6598.
